What Is Elmiron?

Elmiron is an oral prescription drug used to treat bladder pain or discomfort from a bladder disorder called interstitial cystitis, which more commonly impacts women. It has been on the market since the late 1990s, and it is the only prescription medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat interstitial cystitis, which affects millions of people every year.

Side Effects of Elmiron

Outside of problems in vision, the most common side effects for Elmiron reported to the FDA include:

  • Alopecia, or patchy hair loss
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Does Elmiron Cause Eye Damage?

Since 2018, studies have been conducted linking long-term exposure to Elmiron to the risk of potentially permanent eye damage. In June 2020, both FDA and Elmiron manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals added a change to the drug’s safety-related labeling – linking Elmiron to eye damage. More specifically, the label mentioned that long-term use of Elmiron has been shown to cause pigmentary changes in the retina (also known as pigmentary maculopathy). The retina is a thin layer of tissue in the back of our eye that receives and processes light, allowing us to see.

Eye Damage Symptoms

When Elmiron damages the eye, it can cause the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty reading
  • Difficulty viewing objects up-front
  • Difficulty adjusting to dim lighting or the dark
  • Fields of vision are lost causing paracentral scotoma, or blind spots

If pigmentary maculopathy is caught early on, there is a chance damage can stop. However, at its later stages, the disease can lead to permanent loss of vision.
